This knits up very quickly. A perfect last minute gift for a newborn! The ribbing leads into a little lace detail along the front of the bonnet with a surprisingly delicate effect.

**Special Abbreviation: ssk - this is an alternative to the old psso decrease. To ssk, you slip the next two stitches knitwise, then insert the tip of the left hand needle into the front of these two stitches, then knit them together. If you prefer, you could always use the psso decrease instead. (Slip 1, knit one, pass slipped stitch over), but I find the ssk is quicker and neater.

Materials:
One pair each of 5mm (US 8) and 3.75 mm (US 5) needles.
Worsted weight yarn

With smaller needles, cast on 63 stitches, and rib in k1, p1 ribbing for 6 rows. Change to larger needles.

Next row: knit
Next row: k1, purl to last stitch, k1

Work lace pattern as follows:

Row 1: k2, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, K1. Repeat from * to last stitch, k1
Row 2: k1, *p2, yo, p3tog, yo, p1. Repeat from * to last 2 stitches, p1, k1
Row 3: knit
Row 4: k1, *p1, p2tog tbl, yo, p1, yo, p2tog. Repeat from * to last 2 stitches, p1, k1
Row 5: k1, k2tog, *yo, k3, yo, sl 1, k2tog, psso. Repeat from * to last 6 stitches, yo, k3, yo, ssk, k1
Row 6: purl

Next row: continue in stockinette stitch, knitting first and last stitch of EVERY row, until piece measures 4 1/2 " from beginning, then begin shaping crown as follows:

Row 1: *k5, k2tog. Repeat from * to end
Row 2: k1, purl to last stitch, k1
Row 3: *k4, k2tog. Repeat from * to end
Row 4: k1, purl to last stitch, k1
Row 5: *k3, k2tog. Repeat from * to end
Row 6: k1, purl to last stitch, k1
Row 7: *k2, k2tog. Repeat from * to end
Row 8: k1, purl to last stitch, k1
Row 9: *k1, k2tog. Repeat from * to end
Row 10: k1, purl to last stitch, k1
Row 11: k2tog across row.

Break yarn, leaving 10" tail, then thread tail through remaining 9 stitches and draw up tightly. Sew up crown seam to beginning of crown shaping. Attach ribbon or cord to front corners of ribbing
