By using a bright multi-coloured yarn as the second yarn in this hat, andusing a dark main colour, you get a delightful contrast reminiscent of a stained glass window. Have fun experimenting with different combinations. On a white or cream background, the multi-coloured yarn looks like jewels!
Materials:
1 50 gm skein black or dark coloured DK or sport weight yarn. (colour A)
1 50 gm skein brightly hued multi-coloured DK or sport weight yarn, (colour B)
Set of 3.75 double pointed needles
3.75 mm circular needle, 60 cm long
Gauge: 24 st to 10 cm (4") in colour pattern
To start with an "I-cord" in the centre of the crown: With A, cast 4 stitches onto one of the dpn's. Knit 4, then *without turning, slide stitches to the other end of the needle, and draw yarn tightly behind work and knit 4 stitches again. Repeat from * until cord forms and is about 1" long. Distribute onto 3 dpn's.
Round 1: Increase in every stitch (8 st)
Rnd 2, and all evenly numbered rounds: knit
Rnd 3: Increase in every stitch (16 st)
Rnd 5: *k1, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (24 st)
Rnd 7: *k2, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (32 st)
Rnd 9: *k3, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (40 st)
Rnd 11: *k4, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (48 st)
Rnd 13: *k5, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (56 st)
Rnd 15: *k6, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (64 st)
Rnd 17: *k7, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (72 st)
Rnd 19: *k8, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (80 st)
Rnd 21: *k9, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (88 st)
Rnd 23: *k10, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (96 st)
Rnd 25: *k11, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (104 st)
Rnd 27: *k12, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (112 st)
Rnd 29: *k13, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (120 st)
Rnd 31: *k14, inc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of round. (128 st)
Purl three rounds even. Join in colour B. continue to knit in rounds, following the chart. Repeat the chart 3 times, then work chart row 1 once more. Cut colour B. In A only, purl three rounds, then cast off.
