Very loosely based on the old log cabin quilt patterns. Once you get comfortable with the concept, you are only limited by your imagination.

Materials:
worsted weight cotton in:
A - a variegated colour to show the stripes
B - a suitable solid colour
4 mm needles

Using yarn A:

Cast on 6 stitches. Work 12 rows garter stitch. Cast off, leaving the last stitch on the right hand needle. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 5 stitches along the side (6 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 11 rows garter stitch.

Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 11 stitches along the side (12 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 11 rows garter stitch.

*Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 11 stitches along the side (12 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 11 rows garter stitch. Repeat from * once.

*Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 17 stitches along the side (18 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 11 rows garter stitch. Repeat from * once.

*Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 23 stitches along the side (24 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 11 rows garter stitch. Repeat from * once.

Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 29 stitches along the side (30 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 11 rows garter stitch. Cast off all stitches but the last one. Do
NOT
repeat this set.

Change to contrast yarn. NOW, turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 29 stitches along the side (30 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 5 rows garter stitch.

*Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 32 stitches along the side (33 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 5 rows garter stitch. Repeat from * once.

Okay, last "log". Cast off all stitches but the last one. Turn the piece one quarter turn clockwise, and pick up and knit 35 stitches along the side (36 stitches on needle.) Starting with WS facing, work 5 rows garter stitch.

Cast off all stitches.
