These are a heavy worsted weight man's sock. They knit up quickly, which is nice since hubby Larry really likes these socks! 

Materials:
5 mm dpn's
1 50 gm skein of heavy worsted weight yarn

Cast on 40 stitches, distributed as follows: needle 1 - 14 st, needle 2 - 12 st, needle 3 - 14 st. Join rounds, and rib in k2, p2 ribbing for 8".

Heel flap
: Knit 10 stitches, turn. Knit these 10 stitches, and 10 stitches from needle 3. Divide other stitches so there are 10 stitches each on needles 2 and 3, and 20 st on needle 1 for the heel flap. Knit heel flap as follows:

Row 1: knit
Row 2: sl 1, purl to end
Row 3: *sl 1, k1. Repeat from * to end.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for 18 rows, then repeat row 2 one more time.

Turning the heel:

Row 1: k10, placemarker, k2, ssk, k1, turn
Row 2: sl 1, purl to 2 stitches past marker, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 3: sl 1, knit to 3 stitches past marker, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 4: sl 1, purl to 3 stitches past marker, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 5: sl 1, knit to 4 stitches past marker, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 6: sl 1, purl to 4 stitches past marker, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 7: sl 1, knit to 5 stitches past marker, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 8: sl 1, purl to 5 stitches past marker, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 9: knit (12 st)

Pick up 12 stitches along the first side of the heel flap. Using the second needle, knit across the instep stitches. Using a third needle, pick up 12 stitches on the other side of the heel flap, and 10 stitches from the first needle.

Shaping the instep:
Round 1: knit
Rnd 2 (decrease round): 1st needle - knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. 2nd needle - knit across. 3rd needle - k1, ssk, knit to end.
Repeat these two rounds until there are 40 stitches remaining. Knit 14 rounds.

Shaping the toe:
Round 1 (decrease round):
1st needle: knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1
2nd needle: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1
3rd needle: k1, ssk, knit to end

Knit 4 rounds, then one decrease round
Knit 3 rounds, then one decrease round
Knit 2 rounds, then one decrease round
Knit 1 round, then one decrease round
Knit 1 round
Knit 2 decrease rounds. (12 stitches)
